Thackeray. Original drawing for Pendennis: “A Recognition.” Ink and pencil, undated.
Thackeray illustrated Pendennis himself, which, like Vanity Fair, included both full-page illustrations and illustrated initials at the beginning of each chapter. This illustration to a scene in the penultimate part is reminiscent of the drawing in Thackeray’s 1832 letter to his cousin James Carmichael-Smyth.
