Georges Roch brooch given to Annie Adams Fields.

It was Thackeray‘s American publisher James T. Fields, of Ticknor & Fields, who first proposed Thackeray’s first trip to America. Thackeray was a frequent and popular guest in the Fields’s home in Beacon Hill. Annie Fields, James T. Fields’s wife, later wrote, “…Thackeray came now and then in the course of the evening to have a little jollity…The good things which came with him were so much better than any of the good things which were brought for dinner, that I forget everything…save that kind, loving, beneficent presence…” Thackeray presented her with this brooch, made in Switzerland, during one of his visits.
