Thackeray to Whitwell Elwin, 24-31 May 1861. MS Eng 951.16.

“I think sometimes I am deservedly unpopular…I rather like it”; Thackeray to Whitwell Elwin, 24-31 May 1861.

Thackeray wrote this letter to writer and editor of the Quarterly Review Whitwell Elwin in May 1861, after he had been refused as a member of the Literary Club, discussing the censure he received from many of his fellow writers. “I know the Thackeray that those fellows have imagined to themselves – very selfish heartless artful morose and designing man – and poor Yates in the famous Garrick Club row, was only the mouthpiece of his master.”
