Vanity Fair in parts (London: Bradbury & Evans, 1847-8).

Vanity Fair appeared serially over a year and a half; each part contained advertisements for books and products readers might desire, much like the advertisements appearing in magazines today. All of Thackeray’s later serialized works appeared in similar yellow wrappers, distinguishing them from the green ones which covered Dickens’s books. (Reading the first few numbers, Jane Carlyle wrote to her husband Thomas, “He beats Dickens out of the world.”)
