Vanity Fair in America (New York: Harper & Bros., 1848) Vanity Fair appeared in two parts in America in late summer 1848, after the completion of its publication in Britain. This publication was not Thackeray’s first appearance in print in America— American readers were already familiar with his magazine pieces—but critics did not consider him to be a serious writer until the publication of Vanity Fair.
