Diary of Shirley Brooks, 1864. Thackeray and writer Shirley Brooks had been close friends since Thackeray’s Punch days in the 1830s. Following Thackeray’s death, Brooks worked tirelessly to erect a bust of his friend in Westminster Abbey. Brooks’s diary from 1864 records these efforts. The monument was finally erected in November of 1864. |
