Harvard Library Preservation Services is pleased to announce that it has joined the Open Preservation Foundation (OPF) as a Charter Member. The OPF is an international membership organization whose mission is to provide advocacy and support for shared solutions for the effective and efficient preservation of the digital content so critical to contemporary life, culture, and education. This includes leading community efforts to create a growing reference set of sustainable open-source digital preservation tools and supporting resources.

Many of these OPF-supported tools and activities are critical to Harvard’s own digital preservation efforts. Stephen Abrams, head of the Harvard Library Digital Preservation program, says: “The OPF plays a vibrant international role in raising awareness of and encouraging effective responses to critical issues of digital preservation theory and practice.  We are delighted to join OPF and look forward to supporting and participating fully in its significant advocacy, education, and community development efforts and promoting and enhancing its open-source technology portfolio.”

Harvard was welcomed to the OPF by executive director Martin Wrigley: “It is fantastic to welcome Harvard Library to our growing membership. Harvard has a unique digital collection and brings a wealth of experience to the community.”

The Electronic Archiving System (EAS), the Library’s central infrastructure for email preservation, will shortly be contributed to the OPF portfolio to facilitate its more widespread adoption, provide new collaborative opportunities to expand upon its functionality and interoperability, and ensure its greater long-term sustainability as a valuable community resource.
