Bruno Petzold, a German-born teacher, lived in Japan from 1910 until his death in 1949.

His interest in Buddhism grew after living in Japan, and he eventually became a minister of Mahayana Buddhist school Tendai Shu (天台宗).
Petzold collected all kinds of books related to Buddhism during his time in Japan. More than 6,000 of his Japanese books were sold to the Harvard-Yenching Library following his death.
Around 500 scrolls of this collection have been digitized and are now available to view online.
