Collecting Along an Ellipse: Art and Ephemera from Eastern Europe, Alex Fisher, MA student in Design Studies explains, "separates into three porous pools: artworks, printed matter, and correspondence. The artworks are the principal focus of this essay. The printed matter predominantly plays a complementary role to the artworks. The correspondence roots the affinities that propel my collecting."

Fisher writes that collecting is "a habit that emerged as a coping mechanism for my peripatetic upbringing, during which I moved from one city to another on the Eastern Seaboard every few years. In the absence of consistent surroundings, I poured myself into items that I could variably hold fast or make swift use of."
