Harvard Library Photo Policy

Guidance for filming and photography within Harvard Library

PERSONAL PHOTOGRAPHY

We encourage personal photography by Harvard students, faculty, staff, and guests, as long as photos are taken with hand-held, self-contained cameras without a flash or tripod.

We ask that anyone taking photos in our spaces for personal use please respect the privacy of other library users. They cannot be photographed without prior consent, and photography cannot be used for commercial purposes.

Commercial or Editorial Photography and Filming

We are a working library. Our priority is enabling user access to our collections and services. We consider requests, on an individual basis, that expand access to our materials and/or support teaching and learning.

Requests to film, record, or photograph for commercial or editorial purposes must be made to Harvard Library Communications and submitted at least 10 business days before the requested date.

University Filming and Photography Policy

"Any individual or organization wanting to engage in photography or filming on Harvard property for broadcast, public dissemination, or commercial usage of any type needs advance permission. All requests should go initially to the Communications Office of the School or unit involved. For requests involving the University, inquiries should be submitted to Harvard Public Affairs and Communications (HPAC) via the digital request form. In determining whether permission should be granted, Schools and units may consult with HPAC, the President and/or Provost’s Office, Dean of the affected School, and/or other University officials as appropriate."
