From Academie-land to Zelda: Mapping the Fictional and Imaginary
Creating a map from the bones of a story, released from the rules of the real world, unlocked from the tyranny of the latitude/longitude grid — this is a return to an earlier era of cartography. A time before data driven maps and software with 1000 different projections— when California wasan island and sea monsters were abundant.
Cartophiles everywhere rejoice to find a map on the endpapers of a book. Such maps give shape to the imaginary world we are about to inhabit once we start reading. They illustratethe sometimes completely illogical and fantastic worlds that characters live in.
This exhibition explores maps from a variety of genres — television, movies, books, video games as well as maps of concepts rather thanstories. Regardless of which genre provided the inspirational material, these maps are all remarkable works of fiction.
